Is VPS / VDS right for me?

The two terms (VPS and VDS) are interchangeable depending on what part of the world you are from. They mean exactly the same thing. VPS is Virtual Private Server, whereas a VDS is a Virtual Dedicated Server. Can't spot the difference? Neither can we, so we use VPS on our descriptions and when we reference these servers and packages.

As web sites become more complex, users require additional features on servers that just can't be done on a shared environment. These include everything from running Expired Software as a script requires it, all the way through to running custom modules or Java on a server which Shared Hosting can't support.

Here at Hands-on we've seen an increase for the need of VPS as a step between a Shared Hosting account and the Dedicated Server. A true Dedicated Server is a machine that is entirely for you. Each user on a VPS has their own Server Environment. You have FULL SHELL ACCESS allowing you to install anything on the server you want, and since these are separate from the other users on the same machine, should you receive a flood of traffic, the actions on your site will not hurt other users on the same server. This is not to say that you should strive to have your site offline with too much traffic - you'll want to consider a dedicated server should your site require the need!
